Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini (a town situated in what is Nepal now) under the full moon of May to the clan of the Shakyas, a warrior tribe (hence the name Shakyamuni Buddha). Gautama's father was the king of Kapilavastu, so Gautama was born a prince, but he chose the path of asceticism and became enlightened, realizing the Four Noble Truths that form the basis of his spiritual teachings.
