Fennel is a member of the parsley family. It is mainly grown in Egypt and India. Fennel has an anise-like flavor but is more aromatic, sweeter and less pungent. Ground Fennel is used in curry powders and Chinese 5 Spice powder. Fennel sometimes is part of garam masala powder.
Used widely in the cuisine of Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Germany, Egypt, India, and China.
Hint: Toasting Fennel Seeds accentuates their flavor.
Medicinal uses include: earaches, toothaches, asthma and rheumatism. Also useful to stop hiccups and coughs.
